SUMMARY:Banned Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Banned Book Club will meet the third Tuesday of each month. \nEvery month we’ll read a book that has been banned or challenged. We’ve picked the first few reads\, but we want your suggestions for what we read going forward! \nOur pick for January is Sold by Patricia McCormick \nBook Summary: \nLakshmi is a thirteen-year-old girl who lives with her family in a small hut in the mountains of Nepal. Her family is desperately poor\, but her life is full of simple pleasures\, like raising her black-and-white speckled goat\, and having her mother brush her hair by the light of an oil lamp. But when the harsh Himalayan monsoons wash away all that remains of the family’s crops\, Lakshmi’s stepfather says she must leave home and take a job to support her family. \nHe introduces her to a glamorous stranger who tells her she will find her a job as a maid working for a wealthy woman in the city. Glad to be able to help\, Lakshmi undertakes the long journey to India and arrives at “Happiness House” full of hope. But she soon learns the unthinkable truth: she has been sold into prostitution. \nAn old woman named Mumtaz rules the brothel with cruelty and cunning. She tells Lakshmi that she is trapped there until she can pay off her family’s debt—then cheats Lakshmi of her meager earnings so that she can never leave. \nLakshmi’s life becomes a nightmare from which she cannot escape. Still\, she lives by her mother’s words—”Simply to endure is to triumph”—and gradually\, she forms friendships with the other girls that enable her to survive in this terrifying new world. Then the day comes when she must make a decision—will she risk everything for a chance to reclaim her life?

SUMMARY:Tales Retold Book Club
DESCRIPTION:We will be meeting on the first Tuesday of every month\, to read and discuss original works and spin-offs or retellings based on them. \nOur February pick is a Beauty and the Beast Retelling. \nUprooted by Naomi Novik. \nSummary: \nAgnieszka loves her valley home\, her quiet village\, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border\, full of malevolent power\, and its shadow lies over her life. \nHer people rely on the cold\, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years\, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood. \nThe next choosing is fast approaching\, and Agnieszka is afraid. She knows—everyone knows—that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful\, graceful\, brave Kasia\, all the things Agnieszka isn’t\, and her dearest friend in the world. And there is no way to save her. \nBut Agnieszka fears the wrong things. For when the Dragon comes\, it is not Kasia he will choose.
