SUMMARY:Banned Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us for  Banned Book Club on January 27th @ 4:00 pm \nEvery month we’ll read a book that has been banned or challenged. We’ve picked the first few reads\, but we want your suggestions for what we read going forward! \nBanned Book Club will meet the last Monday of each month. \nOur pick for January is Ninteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult \nBook Summary: \nIn nineteen minutes\, you can mow the front lawn\, color your hair\, watch a third of a hockey game. In nineteen minutes\, you can bake scones or get a tooth filled by a dentist; you can fold laundry for a family of five….In nineteen minutes\, you can stop the world\, or you can just jump off it. In nineteen minutes\, you can get revenge. \nSterling is a small\, ordinary New Hampshire town where nothing ever happens — until the day its complacency is shattered by a shocking act of violence. In the aftermath\, the town’s residents must not only seek justice in order to begin healing but also come to terms with the role they played in the tragedy. For them\, the lines between truth and fiction\, right and wrong\, insider and outsider have been obscured forever. Josie Cormier\, the teenage daughter of the judge sitting on the case\, could be the state’s best witness\, but she can’t remember what happened in front of her own eyes. And as the trial progresses\, fault lines between the high school and the adult community begin to show\, destroying the closest of friendships and families.

SUMMARY:Tales Retold Book Club
DESCRIPTION:We will be meeting on the first Tuesday of every month\, to read and discuss original works and spin-offs or retellings based on them. \nOur July pick is a Hamlet Retelling. \nThe Dead Fathers Club by Matt Haig. \nSummary: \nA ghost story with a twist—a suspenseful and poignantly funny update of the Hamlet story. \nEleven-year-old Philip Noble has a big problem: His dad\, who was killed in a car accident\, appears as a bloodstained ghost at his own funeral and introduces Philip to the Dead Fathers Club. The club\, whose members were all murdered\, gathers outside the Castle and Falcon\, the local pub that Philip’s family owns and lives above. Philip’s father tells him that Uncle Alan killed him and he must avenge his death. When Philip realizes that Uncle Alan has designs on his mom and the family pub\, Philip decides that something must be done. But it’s a much bigger job than he anticipated\, especially when he is caught up by the usual distractions of childhood—a pretty girl\, wayward friends\, school bullies\, and his own self-doubt. The Dead Fathers Club is a riveting\, imaginative\, and quirky update of Shakespeare’s great tragedy that will establish Matt Haig as a young writer of great talent and imagination.

SUMMARY:Tales Retold Book Club
DESCRIPTION:We will be meeting on the first Tuesday of every month\, to read and discuss original works and spin-offs or retellings based on them. \nOur September pick is a Pride and Prejudice Retelling. \nSo Material a Change by Amy D’Orazio. \nSummary: \nMatrimony is the last thing on Elizabeth Bennet’s mind when she arrives at Netherfield Park to tend to her ill sister. When proud Mr Darcy acts rashly to thwart a compromise and tells her that the entire household believes they are engaged\, she dismisses him outright and refuses his offer of marriage. \nBut more surprises await her at Longbourn. Mr Collins is ready with an offer of marriage and it is not only her mother who thinks it a fine match; Mr Bennet is willing to press the point until Elizabeth makes clear such a connexion is impossible—because she has accepted an offer of marriage from Mr Darcy. \nIt is an inauspicious beginning\, an engagement neither desires\, driven to by the machinations of others. Yet what begins as a forced alliance soon changes into something quite different. Will it be enough to lead them into love?

SUMMARY:Banned Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us for  Banned Book Club on September 16th @ 5:30 pm \nEvery month we’ll read a book that has been banned or challenged. We’ve picked the first few reads\, but we want your suggestions for what we read going forward! \nBanned Book Club will meet the third Tuesday of each month. \nOur pick for September is This Book Won’t Burn by Samira Ahmed \nBook Summary: \nAfter her dad abruptly abandons her family and her mom moves them a million miles from their Chicago home\, Noor Khan is forced to start the last quarter of her senior year at a new school\, away from everything and everyone she knows and loves. Reeling from being uprooted and deserted\, Noor is certain the key to survival is to keep her head down and make it to graduation.  But things aren’t so simple. At school\, Noor discovers hundreds of books have been labeled “obscene” or “pornographic” and are being removed from the library in accordance with a new school board policy. Even worse\, virtually all the banned books are by queer and BIPOC authors.  Noor can’t sit back and do nothing\, because that goes against everything she believes in\, but challenging the status quo just might put a target on her back. Can she effect change by speaking up? Or will small-town politics—and small-town love—be her downfall?
