SUMMARY:Tales Retold Book Club
DESCRIPTION:We will be meeting on the first Tuesday of every month\, to read and discuss original works and spin-offs or retellings based on them. \nOur November pick is a Frankenstein Retelling. \nOur Hideous Progeny by C. E. McGill. \nSummary: \nMary is the great-niece of Victor Frankenstein. She knows her great uncle disappeared in mysterious circumstances in the Arctic\, but she doesn’t know why or how… \nThe 1850s is a time of discovery\, and London is ablaze with the latest scientific theories and debates\, especially when a spectacular new exhibition of dinosaur sculptures opens at the Crystal Palace. Mary\, with a sharp mind and a sharper tongue\, is keen to make her name in this world of science alongside her geologist husband Henry\, but without wealth and connections\, their options are limited. \nBut when Mary discovers some old family papers that allude to the shocking truth behind her great-uncle’s past\, she thinks she may have found the key to securing their future… Their quest takes them to the wilds of Scotland\, to Henry’s intriguing but reclusive sister Maisie\, and to a deadly chase with a rival who is out to steal their secret.

SUMMARY:Banned Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us for  Banned Book Club on September 16th @ 5:30 pm \nEvery month we’ll read a book that has been banned or challenged. We’ve picked the first few reads\, but we want your suggestions for what we read going forward! \nBanned Book Club will meet the third Tuesday of each month. \nOur pick for September is This Book Won’t Burn by Samira Ahmed \nBook Summary: \nAfter her dad abruptly abandons her family and her mom moves them a million miles from their Chicago home\, Noor Khan is forced to start the last quarter of her senior year at a new school\, away from everything and everyone she knows and loves. Reeling from being uprooted and deserted\, Noor is certain the key to survival is to keep her head down and make it to graduation.  But things aren’t so simple. At school\, Noor discovers hundreds of books have been labeled “obscene” or “pornographic” and are being removed from the library in accordance with a new school board policy. Even worse\, virtually all the banned books are by queer and BIPOC authors.  Noor can’t sit back and do nothing\, because that goes against everything she believes in\, but challenging the status quo just might put a target on her back. Can she effect change by speaking up? Or will small-town politics—and small-town love—be her downfall?
