SUMMARY:Tales Retold Book Club
DESCRIPTION:We will be meeting on the first Tuesday of every month\, to read and discuss original works and spin-offs or retellings based on them. \nOur June pick is The Juniper Tree Retellings. \nOur main book is Juniper and Thorn by Ava Reid. \nSummary: \nA gruesome curse. A city in upheaval. A monster with unquenchable appetites. \nMarlinchen and her two sisters live with their wizard father in a city shifting from magic to industry. As Oblya’s last true witches\, she and her sisters are little more than a tourist trap as they treat their clients with archaic remedies and beguile them with nostalgic charm. Marlinchen spends her days divining secrets in exchange for rubles and trying to placate her tyrannical\, xenophobic father\, who keeps his daughters sequestered from the outside world. But at night\, Marlinchen and her sisters sneak out to enjoy the city’s amenities and revel in its thrills\, particularly the recently established ballet theater\, where Marlinchen meets a dancer who quickly captures her heart. \nAs Marlinchen’s late-night trysts grow more fervent and frequent\, so does the threat of her father’s rage and magic. And while Oblya flourishes with culture and bustles with enterprise\, a monster lurks in its midst\, borne of intolerance and resentment and suffused with old-world power. Caught between history and progress and blood and desire\, Marlinchen must draw upon her own magic to keep her city safe and find her place within it. \n  \nWe Also Suggest: \nThe Juniper Tree by Barbara Comyns

SUMMARY:Jane Austen Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Jane Austen Book Club is taking the places of the J.R.R. Tolkien Book Club. \nWe will be reading through all of Jane Austen’s works. \nFor June we will be watching Sense and Sensibility. \nSummary: Marianne Dashwood wears her heart on her sleeve\, and when she falls in love with the dashing but unsuitable John Willoughby she ignores her sister Elinor’s warning that her impulsive behavior leaves her open to gossip and innuendo. Meanwhile Elinor\, always sensitive to social convention\, is struggling to conceal her own romantic disappointment\, even from those closest to her. Through their parallel experience of love—and its threatened loss—the sisters learn that sense must mix with sensibility if they are to find personal happiness in a society where status and money govern the rules of love.

SUMMARY:Movie Night
DESCRIPTION:Movie night is back starting June 12! \nEvery Second Thursday @ 5:30 \nWe’ll pop the popcorn\, you bring your blanket and any other snacks!\n\nThe movie goers get to pick the movie for the upcoming month!\nOur movie for June is Jumanji (1995). \nSummary:\nA magical board game unleashes a world of adventure on siblings Peter (Bradley Pierce) and Judy Shepherd (Kirsten Dunst). While exploring an old mansion\, the youngsters find a curious\, jungle-themed game called Jumanji in the attic. When they start playing\, they free Alan Parrish (Robin Williams)\, who’s been stuck in the game’s inner world for decades. If they win Jumanji\, the kids can free Alan for good — but that means braving giant bugs\, ill-mannered monkeys and even stampeding rhinos!

SUMMARY:Banned Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us for  Banned Book Club on January 27th @ 4:00 pm \nEvery month we’ll read a book that has been banned or challenged. We’ve picked the first few reads\, but we want your suggestions for what we read going forward! \nBanned Book Club will meet the last Monday of each month. \nOur pick for January is Ninteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult \nBook Summary: \nIn nineteen minutes\, you can mow the front lawn\, color your hair\, watch a third of a hockey game. In nineteen minutes\, you can bake scones or get a tooth filled by a dentist; you can fold laundry for a family of five….In nineteen minutes\, you can stop the world\, or you can just jump off it. In nineteen minutes\, you can get revenge. \nSterling is a small\, ordinary New Hampshire town where nothing ever happens — until the day its complacency is shattered by a shocking act of violence. In the aftermath\, the town’s residents must not only seek justice in order to begin healing but also come to terms with the role they played in the tragedy. For them\, the lines between truth and fiction\, right and wrong\, insider and outsider have been obscured forever. Josie Cormier\, the teenage daughter of the judge sitting on the case\, could be the state’s best witness\, but she can’t remember what happened in front of her own eyes. And as the trial progresses\, fault lines between the high school and the adult community begin to show\, destroying the closest of friendships and families.
